Background

King Aldric is remembered as the first king of Aldenheim, the ruler who turned a peninsula of rival roads, rival loyalties, and proud local powers into something that could imagine itself as a single realm. In the public telling, he was a builder before he was a conqueror: he secured Stonebridge, raised the Noble Wall, strengthened trade routes, and spent years persuading peoples who did not trust one another that survival might be easier together than apart.

He was never remembered for softness. Aldric understood rule as an exercise in endurance — how long grain would last, how much force could be shown without forcing war, how many insults a border lord could swallow before drawing steel. By the later years of his reign he had won something rarer than obedience: reluctant belief. The peninsula had begun to behave as though Aldenheim might actually be real.

Then his sons ruined it. Prince Sted and Prince Jan both died without ever wearing the crown, and the throne passed instead to his brother's son, King Trig. What survived Aldric was not a clean dynasty, but the settlement he forced into existence.
