Embercoil Compact — Aldenheim

The Embercoil Compact was the inventor's league that emerged in Embercrag after the first stable embercoil designs proved that stored heat could be turned into reliable mechanical work. Centered in The Crag, it gathered gnome engineers, artificers, forge-smiths, pipefitters, financiers, and workshop masters who understood that the new machines were too powerful to remain the secret of one hold alone. Just as important, they understood that the engines were small enough to spread almost anywhere.

Public Face

Most people remember the Compact as the old agreement that kept the first steam-engine designs from being locked inside a single mountain vault. Its members argued that if coil-machinery was going to remake the realms, it had to be standardized, taught, and spread before sabotage, monopoly, or patent-war strangled it in infancy. Because embercoil engines could be fitted into existing wagons, pump frames, hull housings, and workshop rigs, the Compact believed secrecy would fail anyway unless the craft was organized early.

Known Functions

Share approved embercoil and engine designs between allied workshops.
Establish common measurements for pipework, valves, housings, and pressure marks.
Train machinists, runners, maintenance crews, and field repairers.
Negotiate contracts with crowns, cities, guild halls, and freight interests.
Prevent the earliest engines from becoming purely military assets in private hands.

Hidden Purpose

Current Relevance

The Compact is weaker as a formal institution than it once was, but its standards still shape machine craft across Aldenheim. Old engine plates, workshop diagrams, and maintenance manuals still bear Compact marks. In Embercrag, invoking Compact tolerances or build practices can still settle an argument between machinists faster than an appeal to noble authority.
