Geography

Gildwater is the main northern port city of Crownvale. It sits in Chain Bay at the mouth of the Alden River, where northern sea traffic narrows toward the coastal lock of the Alden River Locks and the long inland passage toward Still Lake of the Vale. The harbor opens wide enough to feel public and busy rather than fortress-tight: piers, walkways, quay stairs, mooring posts, and bright-fronted businesses all turned toward the water.

The city is less a deep inland settlement than a place where routes overlap. Cargo comes off bay craft to be counted, taxed, stored, and moved south. Passengers arrive from the northern coast, the islands, and the wider Gray Sea looking for onward travel, respectable lodging, or someone who knows how to arrange passage without asking many questions. There are not many permanent residents of Gildwater compared to the number of people moving through it at any given time, and the city has shaped itself around that fact.

From the harbor, Origin Isle can sometimes be seen as a dark withheld shape in the bay beyond the traffic lanes. Most people in Gildwater treat it as a fact of the horizon rather than a destination.

Districts

The Boardwalk - the public heart of Gildwater and the part most travelers mean when they say they have been there. Painted railings, posted sailing boards, ticket stalls, chandlers, fish-sellers, food carts, musicians, ferrymen, weatherproof awnings, and enough polished frontage to make the harbor feel more welcoming than the work behind it really is. The main overnight inn stands here, and the Characters/Hatter of Hearthmere keeps a boardwalk shop stocked for travelers, officers, and anyone wanting dock fashion that still looks respectable inland.

Lockside - the machinery-and-freight face of the city. Here the harbor tightens into queues, crane lines, bonded warehouses, customs tables, pilot offices, and waiting berths for vessels taking the lock passage inland. Steam pumps, winches, and shouted timing matter more here than charm. This is where Crownvale's practical power is easiest to see.

The Lower Quays - the rougher working district below the polished frontage, where labor is hired, cheap rooms are rented by the night, and cargo sometimes changes description between one ledger and the next. The Mooring Guild operates a Mooring House here, and everyone on the waterfront understands that many problems are solved faster inside it than through official channels.

Backshore - the thin strip behind the harbor where the people who actually remain in Gildwater live and repair what the transient city wears out. Ropewalk sheds, cooper yards, net lofts, lamp shops, boiler patchers, laundry lines, family kitchens, and cramped little courtyards sit here out of sight of most visitors. It is quieter than the waterfront, but not gentler.

  • The Crown Customs House - manifests, fees, inspections, bonded storage, and the careful fiction that every important crate passes through honest hands.
  • The Pilot Lantern - a harbor lookout and signal point above the quays where incoming traffic, weather, and bay conditions are read before anyone risks the approach.

Under the Corruption

On first arrival, Gildwater still looks like a city that works. Ferries keep time when they can. Cargo changes hands quickly. The boardwalk stays bright, the inn keeps rooms, and officials present the port as orderly, inspectable, and under control. The signs of strain are there, but they are easy to mistake for diligence: tighter inspections, faster unloading, more guarded accounting, crew lists checked twice, and warehouse doors closed sooner at night.

The deeper truth is that the city now depends even more heavily on arrangements it would never describe in public. When quarantine rules snarl traffic, when captains will not wait for a clerk, when a shipment cannot be left sitting on a quay until morning, official order quietly leans on the people who can still move labor, berth space, and silence at speed. Gildwater's polished face remains intact partly because the Mooring Guild keeps the hidden machinery of the harbor from locking up completely.
