Background

Sylic did not begin by trying to invent a better knife. He began by asking whether the same heat-stone principles that slow The Frost Corruption in walls, lamps, and carried wards could be focused along an edge. The answer, after several failed housings and one ruined workbench, was yes.

The resulting dagger is plain in shape and almost surgical in finish. A thin fragment of Heat Stone sits in the guard, with fine copper channels worked into the hilt and tang to carry that held warmth through the blade. It never grows hot enough to glow, but it remains steadily warm to the touch and becomes noticeably hotter in the presence of corrupted flesh.

Sylic uses it as both field tool and weapon: for cutting tainted tissue free of a specimen, opening sealed infected matter without freezing his hands, or striking quickly when something corrupted gets too close to a worktable.

Properties

  • Functions as a magical dagger.
  • Against creatures corrupted by The Frost Corruption, it deals an extra 1d4 fire damage on a hit.
  • The blade gives off a restrained steady warmth and does not frost over in corrupted environments.
  • When brought close to active corruption, the heat-stone in the hilt brightens faintly and the metal grows warmer in the wielder's hand.
