The Frost Corruption is not merely harsh weather, nor a simple curse of winter. It is a spreading magical blight believed by most common accounts to have first emerged from Frostmarch, where blue-white rime, failing memory, and unnatural stillness were recorded long before the rest of the peninsula understood they were connected.

In practical terms, the Corruption behaves like a parasitic wrongness. It drinks heat, dulls identity, and rewrites living things into colder, quieter, more obedient versions of themselves. Infected places do not merely become cold. They become less true to what they were before.

Across Aldenheim, people most often describe its presence in three ways:

  • Cold that does not behave naturally - flames shorten, breath hangs too long, and metal bites skin even in mild weather.
  • A quiet that feels crowded - sound dampens, footsteps feel delayed, and echoes return with the wrong cadence.
  • A sense of subtraction - colors dull, names slip from the tongue, and familiar places become difficult to picture once you leave them.

Signs of Spread

Most public scholarship places the earliest known outbreaks in Frostmarch, especially around old ice, ruined holds, and isolated northern communities. Whether that is true origin or only the first region to name the danger remains disputed in academic circles. In practice, however, few outside Frostmarch care about the distinction.

The Corruption appears to require living carriers or recently living environments in order to spread effectively. It can cling to microbes, roots, fungi, beasts, and people alike. It does not need intelligence. It only needs something alive enough to continue a pattern.

The most common observed vectors are:

  1. Tainted objects
    • Corrupted relics, cargo, tools, and sealed containers often radiate a slow unnatural chill.
    • Prolonged contact can produce frostbite-like bruising, numbness, and recurring dreams.
    • Water kept near such objects sometimes develops a faint oily sheen.
  2. Compromised living hosts
    • Animals are often affected before settlements notice larger patterns.
    • Infected people may continue to move, speak, and obey habit long after judgment begins to fail.
    • Once affliction deepens, physical contact can become a spreading risk.
  3. Places where warmth gathers and fails
    • Hearths, bathhouses, barracks, crowded inns, and workshops sometimes become outbreak sites.
    • Public theory holds that the Corruption seeks places where life is dense and warmth is shared, then hollows them from within.
  4. Shared symbols, dreams, and repeated language
    • Those exposed may begin reporting the same images in sleep.
    • Pale writing or repeated phrases can appear across multiple households.
    • Copies of certain texts appear more dangerous than oral retellings, though the exact reason remains uncertain.

Stages of Affliction

Stage 0: Contact

  • Local chill, brief vertigo, metallic taste.
  • Animals become skittish or go unnaturally still.

Stage 1: The Draft

  • Persistent cold in the extremities.
  • Minor failures of memory: names, dates, directions.
  • Nightmares featuring ice, bells, and distant light.

Stage 2: The Stillness

  • Emotions flatten or arrive late.
  • Breath fogs indoors.
  • Skin shows pale branching lines like frost on glass.
  • Victims begin to prefer dimness and avoid open flame.

Stage 3: The Rewrite

  • The victim becomes one of the Hollowed: still recognizable, but changed in loyalty and instinct.
  • They may obey simple compulsions: return an item, open a door, extinguish a light, deliver a message they do not understand.
  • At this stage the afflicted may help carry the Corruption by touch, proximity, or repeated contact.

Stage 4: The Bloom

  • A location becomes a Frost Knot: a persistent pocket of winter-wrongness.
  • Manifestations may then appear without a visible host.
  • Recovery becomes rare without intervention.

Common Manifestations

  • Hollowed - people or beasts rewritten into functional servants of the cold.
  • Rime-Wights - shapes made from ice-crystal memory, often mimicking voices they have no right to know.
  • Glassfrost Growths - translucent rime spreading through seams of timber and stone like fungal bloom.
  • The White Script - pale lines of writing found on walls, skin, windows, tools, or paper near advanced contamination.

Common Defenses

Much of what follows is collected from observed results rather than controlled study. Some methods help reliably. Others help only sometimes. A few may work for reasons scholars do not yet understand.

  • Heat-stones - the most widely accepted defense. Heat Stones disrupt the worst cold effects and can slow local spread.
  • Strong communal heat - consecrated hearths, forge-fires, and places of constant human activity appear harder for the Corruption to fully claim, though this is not universally reliable.
  • Light that reveals - the Lantern of Steady Flame and similar revealing wards seem to interfere with corrupted creatures and active Frost Knots.
  • Quarantine and destruction of tainted vectors - isolating suspect cargo, copied texts, and relics can reduce secondary spread.
  • Folk practices of honesty - some villages insist that confession, oath-keeping, and deliberate truth-speaking weaken outbreaks. Scholars usually list this as folklore, though the persistence of the belief is notable.
