Origin

Mined in The Crag and first worked at scale by the industrial holds and gnome engineers of Embercrag

Background

A heat stone is a dense mineral core cut from the deep stone of The Crag and prepared so that it releases steady warmth for decades, sometimes a full century or more. In practical terms, they are one of the most important materials in Aldenheim: part fuel source, part defensive tool, part political leverage. A fitted heat stone can warm a room, keep a table or wall niche usable through hard cold, feed a boiler, or hold back the worst effects of bitter weather without open flame.

They began as a mining solution in Embercrag, where reliable heat meant ore could be moved, tools kept workable, and crews kept alive below the mountain. From there their use spread everywhere need outran comfort. Lighthouse beacons in Pearlwatch burn with rationed heat-stones. Workshops and archives build them into walls and tables. Caravans, healers, and winter travelers carry smaller housings when they can afford them. Machines such as the Steam Wagon depend on them when wood, coal, or constant tending would be less practical.

In the age of The Frost Corruption, heat stones matter even more. They are the most widely accepted common defense against the deep unnatural cold: not a cure, not a ward against every expression of the Corruption, but one of the few things ordinary people trust to work at all. Their importance is old enough that a heat-stone was one of the offerings laid down at The Founding of Aldenheim on behalf of Embercrag, and some scholars suspect that old resonance is part of why they trouble corrupted cold as effectively as they do.
