Watchers of the Five Realms

The Watchers of the Five Realms are the living bearers of the Marching Maps of Aldenheim, five enchanted maps first bound at The Founding of Aldenheim so that each realm would remain visible to the others. A Watcher is not a ruler in the ordinary sense. The role is older and stranger than that: part witness, part wayfinder, part keeper of the old promise that the realms of Aldenheim do not get to survive one at a time.

For generations, the Watchers were the people called when roads failed, warnings had to cross borders faster than decrees, or travelers needed help that courts and local lords would not give. They became part protectors and part folklore across the peninsula — known for appearing where the need was greatest, helping those whose choices still served the wider good, and vanishing again before anyone could turn them into mere officials.

That charge has hardened under The Frost Corruption. The Watchers now act as a scattered network of investigators, couriers, defenders, and keepers of dangerous truths. Each carries the character of their own realm into the same shared work: keep ordinary people alive, hold the realms together long enough to matter, and trace the Corruption back to whatever truth first set it loose.

The office was made for five. More than twenty years ago, the Lost Guide of Frostmarch vanished from the Marching Maps of Aldenheim, and Frostmarch's place in the old circle went dark with him. Since then the Watchers have gone on as four, but never as whole. Every warning, every council, and every plan still carries the shape of that missing fifth voice.
